Girls on the Run

By Emily Bettridge

On Saturday, November 15, Girls on the Run of Eastern Iowa will be celebrating the end of their fall season by hosting their 8th annual Fall 5K at the University of Iowa’s Ashton Cross Country Course in Iowa City. The race begins at 10am and registration opens at 8am. All are welcome to come and join the girls as they showcase what they learned all season. The first place male and female community runners will receive a $50 gift certificate from Running Wild. And you don’t have to run the 5k – walkers are also welcome!

Girls on the Run is a non-profit organization that inspires third through sixth grade girls to be joyful, healthy, and confidant. The program combines running with lessons that empower girls to become independent thinkers, enhance their problem-solving skills, and make healthy choices.

The proceeds of the race will go towards funding scholarships for the girls in the program. Girls on the Run has an extensive scholarship offering, with 40% of the girls receiving full scholarships to participate in the program, and another 20% receiving partial scholarships.

Girls on the Run is also looking for females that are 18 and older to be running buddies for the 5k. The running buddy will run the length of the race with a girl from the program and cheer them on as they complete the race. If running is not for you, volunteers are always welcome as well.

Links for both the registration for the 5K and volunteering options can be found on the left side of the page on the link below.

Hope to see everyone come out and help celebrate the end of the girls’ fall season!
