How does it work?

Throughout the event, teams of PR students (3 per team) will work with teams of journalism students (3 per team) to cover a crisis scenario event.  With the help of very tenured mentors, PR teams will prepare a variety of industry-standard resources and present their message to student journalists at a press conference in the Adler Journalism Building.  Following the press conference, journalism students will prepare, with the help of very tenured mentors, both print and multimedia packages covering the crisis event.  Don’t be afraid if you feel your skills haven’t been perfected yet, the competition is designed to help YOU learn.  Be on the look out for breaking news updates and last-minute twists—this is as close to the real thing as you can get!

What’s in it for me?

This competition is serious, and so are the prizes.  The winning PR team will get to tour Ogilvy PR in Chicago and the winning Journalism team will get to tour the Des Moines Register. On top of the prizes you’ll be gaining experience and acquiring in depth knowledge about how to handle a communication crisis!

What should I bring with me?

The Media Crisis Competition is an exciting, fast-paced event, with a dynamic networking component built-in.  All participants are encouraged, but not required, to bring a laptop, pen and paper, and resumé or business card.  Professional attire is recommended.

Do I need a team?

The short answer?  No.  Although teams are welcome to register together, individuals are encouraged to register as well.  We’ll place you on a team with like-minded teammates and put you in contact with each other in time for the competition.

What if I don’t have any experience?

No problem, we’re all here to learn.  Professional mentors will roam amongst the teams providing advice and guiding them towards success in their category.  We’ll also start the day with a brief crash course in crisis communication or crisis coverage, depending on your specialty, to bring you up to speed.
